[dragon] Tattoo Question

I saw a posted combo that would be great if it worked which I don't think it
does entirely but would like to make sure.

If you put a Crane Tattoo and an Arrowroot Tattoo on the same personality,
then you could use the Arrowroot tattoo ability to choose that personality
to die in the place of another.  So far, so good.  Now after they go to the
discard pile, the Crane Tattoo effect sets in and they get returned to you
fief.  No problems so far.  However, aren't the Tattoos lost once that card
hits the discard pile?  The combo I read seemed to be claiming that you
could turn this personality into a recyclable machine.

How exactly does all of that work?  Do the Tattoo abilities get lost when it
ceases to be a personality and becomes a card by going to the discard pile?
Or because the tattoos add the ability is that meant to be read as if that
ability were now printed on that card?
