Why the heck not. Somtime in my Magic days, *shudders* Before Magic players
got ahold of it. (long explanation) I was hanging out in a gaming store In
Denver, Attactix to be precise. Crusing through the Warhammer miniatures to
see what else I might want to add to an allready viscious Lizardman army,
when I realised, Ive not seen a thing based on Asian culture in quite a long
time. So I bounced up to the couter and asked if there were any interestin
games based on Japanese, or Chinese history. I was vaugely answered with
some referance to Musashi Miyamotos, Book of 5 Rings. Somthing about a card
game, and the words "Better than Magic". Well, at that time I was starting
to believe just about anything could be better than magic, so I reserved a
starter from their first shipment, and when I was asked to specify what
clan, I froze. "Clan? You mean they actually bothered to be accurate?" So I
went over the list of Clans and the Quotes that were to be printed on the
(Imperial?, My memory sucks, and I fell out of the game for quite a while)
starters.
About three inutes of pondering led me to notice somthing on the list I
haddnt before. "You cannot defeat what you don't understand" A sadistic
smile crossed my lips. Dragon huh? How truly appropriate. From then on, I
would play Dragon.
The next thing I knew, the game was big, Attactix was loaded with people,
all Playing L5R. My friend Bobby, was playing Lion, and awaiting a new
clan, the Scorpion, and introduced me to the man he said was the best, some
kid named Burgstrom. I got spanked, badly, and laughed. "Impressive, the
Lion are good strategists," Chris looked me dead in the eye and said "We
are." Followed by lots of me blinking. "WE?" He explained to me that
players develop an attachment to thier clans, some become thier clan. So I
played him again, pondering the entire game, what would the Dragon do? Think
like them, make mistakes on purpose, let his Lion confidence get the better
of him, then when that badaas province strength ability has worked its magi
c a few times. Stomp his offence, and...and what? Wait, whats this Iaijutsu
duel thing? Gohei is getting on my nerves...splat, I love thins game.
I won, barely, but I won. and a few of the other players begin calling me
Mirumoto sama, Introducing themselves as members of their clans as well. So
I took the bait. "Please, call me Shido"
From then on, I would be Dragon.

I look back at it now, and marvel at beating him, even if its just the
once.
So, every time I get the chance, this little 20 year old Goth freak, Curtis
Scott, will walk into a game shop and whip out the old Dragon beatdown.
Partially as a reminder that we dont have to play evangelits decks to win,
and partially so I can say I was trained by the best.
