I'll clean up this anecdote for a public listserv.

Late in his life, English revolutionary John Wilkes had retired and was 
living a quiet life in London.  One day he was on his way to a performance 
(Opera, I think) when some woman recognized him.  She shouted out the old 
battlecry "Wilkes and Liberty!" that had made him so famous in his younger 
days.

Wilkes took out his cane and whacked the woman across her back.  "Shut up, 
you old bat," Wilkes scolded her. "That's all over now."

True story--except that Wilkes used stronger language than "bat."
