It's not just in the cards.
I was at one of the GSTs last year, and two prominent Lions
werwe trying to recruit another Lion player: one wanted him
to join the Matsu House Guard (a movement dedicated to
keeping the Matsu family in charge of the clan), the other
was pitching the Akodo Legion (promoting the kami's name
for the clan leader). Whether this fissure is great
enough to be exploited is another matter.

I agree. She is, after all, about 400 years old. :P

I was thinking about that yesterday.
I think it'd be neat if the game designers made experienced
versions of the other 3 Phoenix samurai in Gold: Aikune,
Kai, and Yoma (each should represent a slightly different
play style: Kai for samurai might, Yoma for
samurai/shugenja interaction, and Aikune for dueling).
Then, upon Tsukune's death, they send out a poll to the
Phoenix in the IA; they vote as if they were the Soul of
Shiba as to who will be the next champion, and the winner
of the poll gets an experienced 2 version as the champion.
They could do something similar in the Dragon: when Uso
passes to the afterlife, they could let us vote on who
becomes the next Mirumoto daimyo (options: Ukira,
