Just to throw a little more mud in here....

Perhaps he doesn't Destroy the tonfa, during one of his turns, he
bows and gives one of the Tonfas to a partner he has already on your
table.

And of course, the turn afterwards, his partner graciously returns
the Tonfa, thus "re-adding" the Double-Chi..

This is, of course, assuming you can give him back the Double-Chi
trait.
